This year for Easter weekend, I attended the Dutch Comic Con 2016 event, that focusses on film, tv, comics and gaming in popular culture. At the event most often people dress up to costume play (cosplay) as a character of a popular comic, movie or tv show. For my costume of the day, I decided to boldly go where I have never gone before and dress up as Captain Uhura, famous from the TV / movie franchise Star Trek.

I thought it would be cool to represent Captain Uhura portrayed by Zoë Saldana from the reboot movie as she basically is a badass in the movie. However another reason for choosing to cosplay the character of Captain Uhura is that when she was portrayed by Nichelle Nichols in the 1960’s she was known to be one of the first characters of African-American descent to be featured as part of the main cast on an American television series. Also let us not forget that there is new Star Trek movie coming this Summer titled, Star Trek Beyond (Link to trailer here) and that this year also marks the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek series.
The advantage of cosplaying Star Trek is that the outfit/uniforms worn in the movie are fairly easy to recreate. So my cosplay was simple red dress sewn from a pattern worn with a black turtle neck.

I am having so much fun doing cosplay. I really think I might start doing it more often, at least once a year. Check out my other cosplay outfits on my Pinterest link here.
